Top Ten Tuesday || My Fall TBR
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week's Top Ten Tuesday is...
Books on My Fall TBR.
I must admit, I'm kinda boring really.
My reading doesn't really change much for the fall or for the seasons period.
I know a lot of people are seasonal readers and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just like my spooky vibes year-round!
My fall TBR (which is really just my current TBR) has mostly horror though there are a few middle grade or even *gasp* YA reads. Please don't tell anyone. I do have a reputation to uphold after all.
Here are a few of the reads I have coming up:

Declan watched the new arrival make his way through the valley of homeless folk littering the alley. He watched closely, curious as the man navigated those scraping the bottom of discarded canned foods and crumpled Styrofoam containers. A child in a tattered green sweatshirt looked up as he grazed past her. She was the only vagrant to note the newcomer’s presence. Not surprising since the young tend to be able to sense such things. Declan stood, a shadow among all these breathing ghosts, a silent witness. The man sought an empty corner in the alley and hunkered down. Tucking his knees to his chest, he closed his eyes and bowed his head.
Declan allowed him a moment to rest or cry. Some did both, while others just stared off slacked-jawed and weary, unaware of their new place in this world. After a few moments, Declan made his way over to introduce himself.
“Hey,” Declan said. “Boyo.”
The man raised his chin and stared. “Hi, can I help you?”
“Yeah, you can tell me your story.”
The guy waved him off and lowered his head. “Sorry, man. I’m trying to get some rest.”
Declan sat next to him. “Rest, eh? Well, you’ve got plenty of time for that. What’s your name?”
“Fuck, man,” the guy said, exasperated. “Go find your pot of gold somewhere else and fuck off.”
“You don’t know, do ya?”
“What? What are you going on about?”
Declan laughed, hearty, with his gut. He hadn’t laughed since, well, since he was alive, he reckoned.
“Jesus,” the guy said. “My name’s Bruce, okay? Now, go bother someone else.”
Declan wiped at tears that never fell and looked Bruce in the eye. “You’re a ghost, boyo.”
“What the hell are you on?” Bruce asked.
Declan pulled his shoulder-length gray hair back in a ponytail, ran his hand over the permanent gray stubble of his face and stood. “Come with me, then.”
“I told you, I need some goddamn rest.”
“And I told you, you’re dead. Now, get up and walk with me.”
He watched as Bruce’s eyes and face loosened, his confidence wavering.
“I promise ya, boyo. It’s no lie. No trick. Sometimes, it happens this way. You don’t even realize. Not until you try to touch someone. Try and talk to someone.”
“I’m talking to you—” Bruce began, but must have caught on midway through. “You’re a ghost.”
Declan nodded.

A Midnight Clear is a collection of six varied stories of dark yuletide cheer. This was a very diverse mix of holiday-themed stories perfect for the season. While they varied in personal ratings, each was well written and matched my desire for a great wintery read. Short story collections are so much fun because the tones and themes can vary greatly from author to author. This perfectly fantastical group of stories did not disappoint!
The Dauntless by Sam Hooker
This one was definitely unexpected. A puzzling story of courtroom justice in...the North Pole? Yes, you read that right. There's a submarine, some elvish killings, and a coal delivery to a Lovecraftian being sleeping away obvious to its Christmas stocking filling up. I probably struggled the most with this one, but Lovecraft has never been my thing.Tidings of a New Moon by Alca Leyva
What happens when werewolves are the civilized ones and human bites are to be feared? This was a fun read. I enjoyed seeing the tables flipped.Movin' on Up by Laura Morrison

They crawl back up from Hell in a sort of twisted Christmas Carol to show a heaven-bound human the error of her ways in attempting to show that her good deeds actually sent others on their paths downstairs.The Poetry of Snow and Stars by Cassondra Windwalker
Here we revisit the Stanley hotel and have a murder mystery to go along with it. I enjoyed the main character but it seemed a little too neatly wrapped up to me. There wasn't a lot of mystery, just an ah-ha moment and some romantic pining that felted a little immature. It was just ok for me.Sleep, Sweet Khors by Dalena Storm
One of my favorites out of the bunch! Ripe with Slavic mythology, Lisa is devastated at the forthcoming death of her favorite uncle. In an attempt to keep death from coming, she creates a horrible world where death doesn't come and life is stuck in a sort of half death. Its grotesque symbolism about life and death and the inability to halt the progression was well done. It's also a great anecdote on children and explaining death.Snow Angel by Seven Jane
Haven't we all tired of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season? This one follows a wife and mother that is disenchanted by all the errands and to-dos of the season and for whom Christmas has lost its glow. It's a bit heavy and morose but I enjoyed the prose of Snow Angel. It's beautifully written and has wonderful imagery.
