What is urban fantasy?

Simply put, it's a subgenre of fantasy. Most often, it's a fantasy set in a cityscape. The "urban" in urban fantasy. It can be set in a modern city or even an alternate city in the modern world. There are typically strong tropes such as the hard-boiled hero of noir, gritty action, and/or a procedural-style plot. Magic, supernatural creatures, and mystery play a big part in urban fantasy. Urban fantasy can also be dark, even bordering on horror.

Looking for your next great urban fantasy series? Whether you love gritty supernatural mysteries, magical cities, vampires, shapeshifters, or action-packed fantasy adventures, these are 10 of my favorite urban fantasy series to binge read. From Kate Daniels to The Dresden Files, these urban fantasy book recommendations are perfect for readers looking for a long-running series to get lost in.

Kate Daniels by Illona Andrews

Kate Daniels urban fantasy book series by Ilona Andrews
Books in series - 10

The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews is an exciting urban fantasy series for readers who enjoy magic, shapeshifters, supernatural creatures, and a strong female protagonist. The series follows Kate Daniels, a mercenary living in a world where magic and technology rise and fall in unpredictable waves. As Kate takes on dangerous jobs, she becomes increasingly entangled in supernatural conflicts, powerful magic, and secrets about her own mysterious past.

Book 1 - Magic Bites

The world has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far, and now magic returned with a vengeance. It comes in waves, without warning, and vanishes as suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells fail.

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for magic… One moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters. Here skyscrapers topple under onslaught of magic; werebears and werehyenas prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds. In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing and remain safe or to pursue his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy…

While trying to back out of this ill-conceived career, Castor accepts a seemingly simple ghost-hunting case at a museum in the shadowy heart of London - just to pay the bills, you understand.

The Terra Vane series by Katie Epstein is an engaging urban fantasy series for readers who enjoy magic, supernatural mysteries, dangerous secrets, and a heroine discovering her place in a world far stranger than she ever imagined. The series follows Terra Vane as she becomes caught up in a hidden supernatural world filled with magic, powerful beings, and threats that challenge everything she thought she knew.

Book 1 - Death Be Blue

My name is Terra, and I’m a Psychic. Strange, you might think, but in a world of vampires, shifters and supernaturals of all kinds, I’m not so weird—in fact, it’s my job to protect them. As an Enforcer Field Agent, I work alongside my cute boss’s annoying younger brother, a wolf shifter called Kaleb. Together we hunt down the most dangerous criminals of all, but it isn’t easy. My visions are my only weapon, and they don’t keep a schedule.

We’re on the tail of a psycho, a cannibalistic serial killer worse than any I’ve seen. We’re close now, but something about this case just doesn’t feel right. There’s a darkness approaching, but even with my gifts I can’t see past it, and if we’re not ready, I fear there might not be a future for any of us.

Between Jobs Blurb:

When you get up in the morning, the last thing you expect is to see a murdered guy hanging outside your window. Things like that tend to draw the attention of the local police, and when you’re squatting in your parents’ old house until you can afford to buy it, another thing you can’t afford is the attention of the cops.

Oh yeah. Hi. My name is Pet.

It’s not my real name, but it’s the only one you’re getting. Things like names are important these days.

And it’s not so much that I’m Pet.

I’m a pet.

A human pet: I belong to the two Behindkind fae and the pouty vampire who just moved into my house. It’s not weird, I promise—well, it’s weird, yeah. But it’s not weird weird, you know?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I haven't done a Top Ten Tuesday in FOREVER! I thought maybe it was time to resurrect it.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday is Books with One Word Titles.

(Gaslamp Gothic #5)
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: December 13th 2019

A poisonous secret.

A terrifying curse.

And a client she’d just as soon see dead in a ditch….

Summer 1889. Harrison Fearing Pell hoped for adventure when she signed on with the Society for Psychical Research as an occult investigator. Slogging through New York’s sewers in pursuit of a “mud man” wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. But the reeking monster terrorizing the dance halls of the Tenderloin leads her to an even more peculiar mystery — and the last man on earth Harry wishes to become entangled with.

James Moran is a prodigy in music, mathematics . . . and crime. Harry’s older sister, the famed detective Myrtle Fearing Pell, has vowed to put him behind bars. But Harry owes Moran a personal debt, so when he demands her aid she can hardly refuse. It turns out that the brilliant black sheep of New York Society is part of a secret club at Columbia College whose members have started dying in bizarre ways that may not be accidents.

Thus begins one of the strangest cases of Harry’s career, a tale of murder, cold-blooded revenge and fairytale bogeymen to make the Brothers Grimm shudder. As the bodies pile up, each preceded by sightings of the victim’s doppelgänger, Harry and her stalwart friend John Weston must race against time to save a man who arguably deserves his macabre fate.
